That SEEMS like a high net cost, right?  But here's where the new CVS Beauty Club program kicks in: For every $50 you spend, you get back $5 (10%).  So I calculate the total (before coupons) of eligible products (hair, skin, fragrance, etc) and subtract 10% of that.  In this case, the total of eligible products is approx $49.48. Rounding, that means I will get back $4.95.  Subtracting the $4.95 from the $8.49 means an actual net cost of $3.54.  If you want to also factor that every 4 green bag tag scans gets you $1 and figuring I'll do these transactions at 2 CVS's to get 2 scans, you could subtract another $0.50.
That makes the CVS net cost $3.04.
